(Asm saihtY sBa).

The ASAM SAHITYA SABHA (Asm saihtY sBa) was founded in 1917 to promote the Language, culture of Assam and its Literature. Presently it has about one thousand Branches all over Assam, in other States of the Country and also abroad.

Its Central office is situated at Jorhat a city of culturally and historical importance. Quite good number of the Branches and the District units of Sahitya Sabha also have their own offices.

Till 1826 A.D. Assam was ruled by Ahom Kings and Koch dynasty. In 1826, as the result of Yandabu Treaty, Assam came under British rule.

However, Assam was always an integral part of the cultural map of India. In the process it had become a part of the Indian Union.

The history of modern Assam, its modern language, literature and culture got the starting points in the early part of the 19th century.

Since 1872 various efforts were made by some culturally elite group of sons of the soil of yester-years, to build up many organizational works for the development of Assamese language, literature and culture of the modern period.

ASAM SAHITYA SABHA (Asm saihtY sBa) was the final result of all those efforts. And in 1917 the ASAM SAHITYA SABHA (Asm saihtY sBa) came into being.

The first conference
ASAM SAHITYA SABHA (Asm saihtY sBa) was held in the month of December 1917 in Sibsagar under the Presidentship of Padmanath Gohain Baruah, a big name in the history of modern Assamese literature. Since then the annual conference (nowadays Biannual ) is being held with great pomp and grandeur.

A writer of high reputation is elected to the presidency of the Sabha in recognition of his outstanding contribution to literature and merit. The biannual session of the Sabha has become now a big literary festival, unique in its character, which is attended by lakhs of people. The writers of the state assemble, mix and exchange their views, and also address the people.

The latest Sahitya Sabha Session was held in February, 2009 at
Dhemaji, a district Head Quarter of Assam.
